Community Entrance Signs

By the time the 2006 construction season ends, more than forty common community entrance signs will mark the entrance of numerous communities throughout the nine county Historic Hills area. The entrance signs will not only enhance each community, but the common signs will help identify the region as Historic Hills. Sign site selection was followed by environmental and archeological evaluations as well as obtaining necessary easements.

Dunbar Jones, a Des Moines-based landscape architectural firm is in the final stages of completing the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) construction documents for the entrance signs, which is necessary before bid letting can begin.

Each community provided 30 percent of the cost of their signs, while transportation enhancement dollars will cover the remaining 70 percent. With the assistance of county engineers throughout the Historic Hills Corridor, the Historic Hills Advisory Committee spent a considerable amount of effort over the past few years to see this project reach fruition. The advisory committee is comprised of tourism and economic development leaders in the nine southern Iowa counties of Appanoose, Clarke, Davis, Decatur, Lucas, Monroe, Van Buren, Wapello, and Wayne.
